MP5 Sub Machine GunThe Heckler & Koch MP5 is a sub machine gun used by many of the world's police and counter-terrorism units. It's ergonomic, accurate and has a high rate of fire. The MP5 comes in several variants including a cut-down version for concealed carry (MP5K) and the MP5SD which is fitted with an integral sound suppressor. The SBS adopted the MP5A3 as its main weapon for Maritime Counter Terrorism (MCT). The A3 has a retractable stock which is ideal for CQB (Close Quarters Battle). Trigger groups with various combinations of safe/single/3-round burst./full-auto are available for the MP5. The SBS tend to use the single-fire mode, firing quick double-taps. The 9x9mm round fired by the MP5 lacks the stopping power of 5.56x45 or 7.62mmx51 but is less likely to pass through a terrorist or wall and and hit a hostage. The MP5SD is suitable for taking out the enemy with a minimum of noise. It's integrated suppressor reduces muzzle flash and the initial sound of the cartridge igniting. It also slows standard ammunition down to sub-sonic speeds which eliminates the crack of a supersonic round. SBS MCT teams will often be led by a man armed with a MP5SD, tasked with neutralizing any threats as the assault team moves into position. The cut-down MP5K is small enough to be carried beneath a jacket or inside a briefcase. It was used by 14 Intelligence Company (the DET), an elite unit of undercover soldiers operating in Northern Ireland. SBS men would often serve tours with 14 Intelligence Company. SBS operations using the MP5 include the assault on the Argentine Spy trawler during the Falklands war. The MP5 has also been used on various anti-drug smuggling operations.
