Intelligence Support

Special Forces operations require accurate and up to date intelligence support. In order to meet the challenges of the post 9/11 world, UKSF has formed several new units to provide vital intelligence to those fighting the war on terror.

Special Reconnaissance Regiment (SRR)

Staffed by soldiers selected from throughout the UK armed forces, the SRR's role is to provide reconnaissance and surveillance support to the SAS/SBS, which should free those units up for more direct combat operations. The SRR takes over the role of the 14th Intelligence Company, or 'the Det', which operated in Northern Ireland during the Troubles, with the SRR focusing on the global war on terror.

18 (UKSF) Signal Regiment

A recent addition to UKSF, the Regiment includes several existing signals regiment under its umbrella, including SBS Signals Squadron. The unit has the role of intercepting enemy radio and mobile telephone communications, providing signals intelligence (SIGINT) to UK special forces. 18(UKSF) Signal Regiment complements the human intelligence (HUMINT) provided by the Special Reconnaissance Regiment (SRR)

18 (UKSF) Signals (SBS Signals) also provides communications and information technology (IT) support to the SBS.
