Ground Support
Previous special operations have been supported by various other ground troops on an ad hoc basis but recently the demands of the global war on terror neccesitates a dedicated and specially trained support force.
Special Forces Support Group
This is a new military unit that was first 'stood up' in April 2006. The role of the force is to provide specialised support for SAS/SBS operations, mostly in the form of providing perimeter security, although other roles may include carrying out secondary and diversionary raids. It is thought that the SFSG will also support UK police with domestic terrorist incidents.
The SFSG is formed from specially trained troops from the Parachute Regiment, Royal Marine Commandos and the RAF Regiment.
